Our Story.

WILDLIFE CAMP ZAMBIA

Where It All Began.

Wildlife Camp has been on the banks of the Luangwa River since 1992.

Wildlife Camp was founded in 1992 by Herman Miles, Anke Cowan, and Ron Cowan, whose common affection for the Luangwa Valley laid the foundations for a family business that has welcomed travelers for more than three decades. Their love for the Luangwa and respect for its wildlife laid the foundation for the camp we are today.

That legacy continues to shape our mission. In 2026, the next generation, Byron Miles and Luke Cowan, took over Wildlife Camp. As caretakers of our 296-hectare peninsula, we are committed to protecting the land and wildlife that make this place special. We support local conservation efforts through the Wildlife and Environmental Conservation Society of Zambia (WECZ), and work alongside surrounding communities to combat poaching, protect forests, and preserve the natural environment.

Wildlife Camp has always been about sharing this extraordinary place, not keeping it out of reach. From camping beneath the stars and affordable dorm accommodation to comfortable chalets and full safari experiences, we offer something for every traveler and budget. As a family-run camp, we want our guests to feel less like customers and more like family.

Our mission is simple: to honour the legacy on which Wildlife Camp was built, care for the land and people of the Luangwa, and make the magic of South Luangwa accessible to all.

Two Locals, One Vision

A New Generation.

Byron Miles & Luke Cowan grew up between Wildlife Camp and Kafunta River Lodge, sharing a childhood that could only really exist in a place like South Luangwa.

In 2026, the next generation, Byron Miles and Luke Cowan, took over Wildlife Camp. Their parents (Herman Miles, Anke Cowan & Ron Cowan) first built Wildlife Camp in 1992 and later started Kafunta River Lodge together in 1998 before the businesses split in 2000. While Herman continued managing Wildlife Camp, Ron and Anke focused on growing Kafunta Safaris. Though they were two distinct operations, the friendship & link between the companies remained through the two boys.

As young adults, life briefly pulled Byron & Luke in different directions. Luke completed his higher education in Australia, while Byron stayed busy managing his father’s camp. Then came the first years of professional life, which unexpectedly reunited them on Australia’s west coast.

While Luke developed his online marketing business, Byron worked in Australia’s mining sector. Perth became a second home for both friends, thousands of kilometers away from the Luangwa Valley where it had all started.

Africa has a strange way of calling people home. Thirty-plus years after their parents first started Wildlife Camp, Luke and Byron are now taking the story forward together. Fresh energy and youthful vision, backed by their parents’ years of experience, now shape the camp’s future.

We are excited to get started and share the place we call home with as many people as possible.

This valley is in our blood, and there’s nothing better than watching someone fall in love with it for the first time. We have some exciting new ideas in the works, but at the heart of it all we’re continuing what has always made Wildlife Camp special, a place that welcomes you with open arms and lets you experience one of Zambia’s wildest corners. Rustic, welcoming and wonderfully unpretentious, with what we reckon is still the best sunset spot in the Luangwa Valley.

We can’t wait to share it with you.

Kind regards,
Byron, Luke & the Wildlife Camp Team
