Take a break from the bush and step into the real Zambia. Alongside our safaris into South Luangwa National Park, Wildlife Camp runs Kawaza village tours for guests who want to see how people actually live here — not a performance of it, the real thing.
You’ll head out with a guide in one of our vehicles, with the day shaped around whatever’s happening locally that day — the market, a workshop visit, a chat with the kids practising their English, or all of the above. Overnight stays in Kawaza Village itself aren’t something we can arrange directly; that authentic a night is really only offered by the Zambian community themselves.
Most tours take you into the local markets to see the community that lives right alongside the National Park going about its day. From there, it depends on what’s on — we can stop in at Project Luangwa, a local charity doing genuine community work (and good coffee), or Mulberry Mongoose Workshop, where old wire snares are turned into jewellery. Tribal Textiles, one of the area’s best-known local businesses, runs tours of both their workshop and shop floor.
Along the way there’s usually a chance to try some local dishes, have a go at pounding mielie-meal for nshima, or just walk through the village at your own pace. Since your guide’s with you the whole time in our vehicle, the exact route is flexible and built around the day.
Tours run subject to vehicle availability and group numbers, and can be arranged at any time of day.
